Aromatherapy and essential oils

May 21st, 2009 · No Comments

Aromatherapy is the use of natural plant essences (Essential Oils) in healing, relaxation and stress.

Plant essences are natural concentrations of the “power” in the plant. Authentic essential oils are rarely used directly on the skin and certainly never rubbed into the skin. They are much too strong and need diluting in water (as in a hot bath) or in natural oils (for use as cosmetics or in massage). Pure essential oils are not cheap. They are highly concentrated essences that go a long way.

Beware of so-called ‘aromatherapy oils’ which do not declare their ingredients. These are likely to be cheap vegetable oils with a tiny unknown amount of fragrance, often synthetic, especially when the ‘aromatherapy oil’ claims to be using expensive oils such as neroli, jasmine and rose.

The science of food energy

May 21st, 2009 · No Comments

For fuel, the body converts the three body fuels (carbohydrates, proteins and fats) into ATP (adenosine
triphosphate). As the name suggests, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is made up of adenosine linked to three
phosphate groups. When one of the phosphates is detached from the adenosine energy is created, leaving ADP (one adenosine and two phosphate groups). This process creates energy that is used for muscle
contractions but the majority of the energy is heat, hence the reason you feel warmer when you exercise.

Nutrition is the most intimate mixing of a man with nature

The latest findings of nutritional science, convincingly prove there are no universal nutritional programmes that can be formulated for large groups of people or, for that matter, for any “standard” man/woman.

Nevertheless, standards of food consumption are fixed in each country. Recommendations on Daily Nutritional Requirements/Allowances are then calculated based on an “average” adult person, with a metabolism considered to be typical for all people. For those of us who are healthy, have a certain body type, high physical activity, etc. These RDA’s have limited use. Furthermore, due to the stresses we individually experience, the balance of nutrients/vitamins we require is probably different proportion than the RDA lists.

Does More Fiber Mean More Weight Loss?

May 21st, 2009 · No Comments

Fiber supplements and foods with added fiber advertise the possibility of easier weight loss and fewer hunger pangs. But these products note that such statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Is adding more fiber really a step toward easier weight control? And if so, does the amount and source of fiber matter?

Washington, D.C. - American Institute for Cancer Research - People who consume more dietary fiber from foods tend to be less overweight, according to several well-controlled studies. For example, among almost 6,000 French men and women, those at a healthy weight ate diets highest in fiber, providing about 20 to 27 grams daily. That amount meets the recommendations for women, with men advised to reach 30-38 grams daily. (In general, U.S. adults average only 15 grams daily.) However, studies testing whether increasing dietary fiber helps overweight people lose weight show mixed results, even when fiber consumption is relatively high.
